America is slowly returning to work, with new realities created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Rightfully so, there has been a lot of focus on the negative changes for the economy and businesses brought on by this awful disease. Eyal Gutentag, who has been building disruptive, high-growth companies and teams for over 20 years, is hoping to at least see some positive changes come out of the crisis. Ideally, we can all look back on this trying time and find a few good impacts.

An Emphasis on Charitable Giving

The pandemic has given many people much needed time to reflect. This down time seems to have had an impact on our desire to help one another and make the world a better place. According to a study by Fidelity Charitable, many people plan to maintain or even increase the amount they donate to charity this year.

Donors are always needed to sustain non-profit organizations, but they become particularly important during a time of crisis such as the pandemic. The survey by Fidelity found that “a quarter of donors plan to increase their donations in response to COVID-19.” Younger people are also getting more involved. “46 percent of Millennials say they will give more in response to the pandemic, compared to 14 percent of Baby Boomers and 25 percent of Gen X. Of those who say they will decrease their donations to charity, concern over a recession and the economy in general was a top trigger.”

Our strengthened focus on giving back is a new reality that Eyal Gutentag, who established the Diane and Eyal Gutentag charitable fund in 2018, hopes will stick around after the pandemic. Philanthropy is an important value to maintain in our communities. The more people who donate their time, energy, or funds, the more we can grow together.

A Strengthening of Relationships

Another new reality created from the COVID-19 Pandemic is that we are putting more attention on our personal relationships. Pre-crisis, many of us were too busy focusing on work and other stresses to spend quality time connecting with our families and friends. One positive from COVID-19 is that we were forced to slow down, and spend genuine moments with the people we love. Not that it has all been easy - but working through challenges such as navigating home schooling, work from home schedules, and other obstacles can be a great way to strengthen bonds.

We have also put more attention on maintaining long-distance friendships and family relationships via virtual platforms. The widespread use of Zoom has opened up new ways to stay in touch with those who are far away. This new reality is one that is welcome to stay post-pandemic.

Improvements in Remote Working and Commercial Real Estate

The pandemic has made it clear that running businesses remotely is not only possible but often desirable. Technology is advancing, and virtual communication techniques are becoming better each day.  This change could help many businesses save money on office space and other costs.

As many companies have realized they don’t need huge office spaces to survive, the demand for hot commercial properties is decreasing. Those who desire to stick to a physical office space will have more options, as good commercial spaces become more affordable. A positive impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is that CEO’s can reconsider their options and choose the best plan for their business.

In the coming months we will learn more about the new realities created by COVID-19. This crisis has been a heartbreaking and trying time for many Americans, and looking on the bright side can only bring a small amount of relief.
